Summary

Undarico Pinto, leader of the Confederación Sindical Única de Trabajadores Campesinos de Bolivia, initiated the Law of the Rights of Mother Earth, and President Evo Morales approved the law in 2010. The law recognizes Mother Earth as a living being with rights and as a sacred being from the perspective of indigenous groups. The law dictates the specific rights inherent to Mother Earth, some of which include diversity, freedom from contamination, and maintenance of system functioning. The law further establishes obligations on parts of the government and individual persons.
