Summary
In 2021, several local conservation groups in the Cotacachi canton in Ecuador presented an ordinance in order to protect the biodiversity and endemic species of the canton. The ordinance, which was submitted in 2021, protects emblematic species in the area, conserves biological diversity, defends flora and fauna, increases public awareness, adopt and applies a regulatory framework and implement necessary mechanisms that strengthens the conservation efforts, avoids mining development, and manages the necessary technical and financial resources annually that contribute to the conservation of the spaces and species indicated by the ordinance. The ordinance is an initiative of the Intag Life Sanctuary—a group trying to protect the communities and ecosystems of the Intag Valley.
