Summary

In 2013, Niles, Ohio adopted a community rights-based ordinance, banning new shale gas and oil extraction and recognizing rights of nature within the city. The ordinance also called for the State of Ohio to adopt a constitutional amendment that gives the people of Ohio the right to local self-government. It also would have declared the right to water, a sustainable energy future, be free from chemical trespass, and community self-government. However, the city council repealed the ordinance a few weeks later.
