Summary
In 2019, residents of Newmarket, New Hampshire submitted an ordinance with the help of CELDF. The ordinance, which also recognized rights of nature, would have given Newmarket the right to deny the Northern Pass—a hydroelectric project. The ordinance declares the right to self-government, a healthy climate, clean, air, and soil, and protection from governmental and corporate interference. Since Newmarket has a town council that decides law-making without a direct vote from residents, the council voted not to adopt the ordinance.
