Summary
On March 15, 2023, the Municipality of Guajará-Mirim approved an amendment to the Organic Law of the Municipality recognizing the Rights of Nature. The Amendment is “to ensure all members of Nature, human beings or no, the right to an ecologically healthy and balanced environment, in harmony with the social and ecological-economic needs of human beings.” (2). It also included a municipal water resources plan along with the recognition of the intrinsic rights of bodies of water, under the aegis of the recognition of the Rights of Nature; which was proposed immediately for the Laje River (Komi Memen), an ancestral being part of the Wari community. This amendment was proposed by Francisco Oro Waram, councillor of Guajará-Mirim and Indigenous leader of Wari community.
