Summary
On March 15, 2023, Francisco Oro Waram, councillor of Guajará-Mirim and Indigenous leader of Wari community, proposed an amendment to municipal Organic Law, recognizing the Rights of Nature. The amendment included changes to ensure that all members of nature, whether human or not, have the right to an ecologically healthy and balanced environment, in harmony with the social and ecological-economic needs of human beings. This also included a municipal water resources plan along with the recognition of the intrinsic rights of bodies of water, under the aegis of the recognition of the Rights of Nature; which was proposed immediately for the Laje River (Komi Memen), an ancestral being part of the Wari community. This amendment was approved March 15, 2023.
