Summary
In 2013, Lafayette, Colorado added a community bill of rights amendment to its city charter. The amendment prohibited the extraction of oil and gas and recognized rights of nature. The amendment gave residents the right to community self-government, clean water, clean air, be free from chemical trespass, peaceful enjoyment of home, and a sustainable energy future. Natural communities and ecosystems were given the right to clean water, clean air, be free from chemical trespass, and exist and flourish. Spearheaded by the Colorado Community Rights Network, the amendment is still in effect.
