Summary

In 2012, the city of Broadview Heights in Ohio incorporated a community bill of rights into their charter, banning corporations from conducting new shale gas drilling and related activities in the city. The charter amendment passed by 67%. The charter amendment recognized rights of nature, guaranteeing natural communities and ecosystems the right to pure water, clean air, and to exist and flourish within the city. However, in 2015 a Cuyahoga County judge struck down the community bill of rights saying it was preempted by state law.
