Summary
In 2019, the Local Commission of Human Rights of the State of Guerrero accepted to receive complaints about rights of nature violations in regard to animal abuse in the Zoochilpan Zoo. The complaints requesting intervention originated from a professor and students of the Master’s in Law at the autonomous University of Guerrero members of the civil association “Responsible Citizen.” The case builds on the constitution of Guerrero, which recognized rights of nature in 2014. The commission concluded that rights of nature had been violated and recommended “permanent training be provided to the personnel who work there [Zoochilpan Zoo] in order to generate a culture of protection, care, dignified and respectful treatment of animals, as a protection measure and safeguarding the rights of nature of which animal species are part.” The decision is still active.
