In 2019, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution promoting harmony with nature. The resolution also emphasized the importance of ensuring the integrity of all ecosystems and noted the importance of climate justice. The resolution invites states to expand a knowledge network to advance a holistic conceptualization and promote harmony with nature, exemplified by indigenous peoples and others. It also recognizes the need for broader measures of sustainable development to complement gross domestic product. The resolution recognizes “that protecting ecosystems and avoiding harmful practices against animals, plants, microorganisms and non-living environments contributes to the coexistence of humankind in harmony with nature” and reaffirms a commitment to the UN’s 2030 Agenda, the UN’s plan of action for sustainable development.
