Summary
In 2016, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution 71/232 promoting harmony with nature. The resolution also emphasized the importance of ensuring the integrity of all ecosystems. The resolution invites states to expand a knowledge network to advance a holistic conceptualization and promote harmony with nature, exemplified by indigenous peoples and others. It also recognizes the need for broader measures of sustainable development to complement gross domestic product. The resolution “calls for holistic and integrated approaches to sustainable development, in its three dimensions, that will guide humanity to live in harmony with nature and lead to efforts to restore the health and integrity of the Earth’s ecosystems” and reaffirms a commitment to the UN’s 2030 Agenda, the UN’s plan of action for sustainable development. The resolution calls upon UN organizations to ensure that no one is left behind and no country is left behind in the implementation of the resolution.
