In 2010, the Mountain Lake Park city council adopted a community bill of rights banning the commercial extraction of gas within the town in order to protect the health of residents and ecosystems. The ordinance also recognized rights of nature, declaring “natural communities and ecosystems…possess inalienable and fundamental rights to exist, flourish and naturally evolve within Mountain Lake Park.”
