Summary
On November 6 2019, the Buliisa District Council in Uganda recognized customary laws of Bagungu Indigenous communities through a resolution. The resolution declares that the Bagungu Custodian Clan’s customary laws are recognized at district level, stating the acknowledgement “that sacred natural sites and territories are central to the cultural values, morals, and traditions and the customary laws of the Bagungu clans” (1). The resolution also notes “the concern of the Bagungu Clan Leaders for Butaka (Mother Earth) and for future generations of all the species on Earth.” The customary laws protect the ancestral homelands and ecosystems. The resolution is still in effect at the time of this summary.
