Summary
In 2021, a bill by Peruvian legislator Lenin Fernando Bazán Villanueva sought to recognize the rights of Mother Nature (Madre Naturaleza) for the first time in Peru. Mother Nature consists of “rights holders” and “subjects of protection” by the Peruvian State. It has the right to exist, develop naturally, regenerate, restore and evolve. In addition, any person can demand the State to comply with these rights. The bill was automatically shelved due to the closing of the legislature.
