Summary
On October 10, 2023, the municipality of Alagoa Nova, Brazil approved an amendment to the municipal Organic Law recognizing the Rights of Nature. The amendment calls upon the already existing responsibility of the Council to prevent the extinction of species and maintain cultural integrity. The document states that the government “and any association whose institutional aims include the protection of public and social heritage, the environment, the rights of racial, ethnic or religious groups or cultural, artistic, aesthetic, historical, tourist and landscape heritage, have active legitimacy to demand compliance with the Rights of Nature and its elements.” (Page 5).
