Summary
In 2021, the 5th International Rights of Nature Tribunal took place in Glasgow, Scotland. Judges heard several cases and applied the Universal Declaration for the Rights of Nature. The tribunal gave recommendations on geoengineering, carbon offsets, net-zero emissions, nature-based solutions, carbon capture and storage, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and rights of future generations. The judges heard two cases: one regarding climate change and another regarding the deconstruction of the Amazon. The tribunal took place alongside COP26 in Glasgow and condemns it for putting a financial value on nature and keeping the fossil fuel industry in business.
