Summary
On January 20, 2022, a protective action was filed in the Provincial Court of Loja, Ecuador for the violation of the rights of nature of the Fierro Urco páramo (wetlands), along with the people’s right to water, the right to environmental consultation and the right to a healthy and ecologically balanced environment. The action was initially denied, as was its subsequent appeal.
In January 2023, the plaintiffs filed an extraordinary protection action in the Constitutional Court of Ecuador for violations of rights of nature (among others) and violations of due process. It is pending admittance and review by the court.
