Summary
In 2020, Thomas Gooch of the Moon Village Association spearheaded the “Declaration of the Rights of the Moon,” which aims to establish legal rights and protections for the Moon. The declaration cites an ancient, primordial relationship with the moon, its importance to life on Earth, and its interconnected lunar environments and landscapes. It also notes that “wealthy nations and corporations are developing technologies that make it possible to return to, mine and otherwise alter the moon.” Many people have signed the declaration, but it holds no legal binding.
