Summary
In 2019, a ruling by the Fourth Court of Execution of Sentences and Security Measures in Pereira, Risalda, Colombia, resolved to recognize the Otún River, its basin, and tributaries as an entity subject to the rights of protection, conservation, maintenance, and restoration by public entities. The sentence bases its arguments on the existing contamination of the river as well as the inaction of public institutions at the local, regional, and national levels, inspired by the sentence on the Atrato River as well as the right to a healthy environment.
