Summary
In 2010, New Zealand enacted the Waikato-Tainui Raupatu Claims (Waikato River) Settlement Act. The act attempts to redress the human-caused degradation of the river and establish a “vision and strategy” to help protect and restore the river for future generations. Recognizing the spiritual connection of the Iwi to the river, the act establishes a co-governance entity made up of members appointed by the Waikato River Clean-Up Trust, Iwi, and the Minister for the Environment.
