Summary
On World Ocean Day 2024, the UN Ocean Decade Coordinating Office for Connecting Ocean and People released the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy in Action. The Venice Declaration is a key contribution to the global conversation around sustainability and the ocean, advocating for the inclusion of Ocean Literacy as a central element at United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) 2025 in Nice, France. The Declaration is conceived as a living document that will evolve through continuous dialogue among stakeholders everywhere. The Declaration will be continuously refined and expanded from the grassroots to champion Ocean Literacy worldwide and restore humanity’srelationship with the ocean.
The Office was established to promote an equitable, just, and harmonious relationship between humans and the ocean. The Declaration urges the UN Ocean Conference 2025 committee to include Ocean Literacy as a central component of the event. The document also serves as a global framework for Ocean Literacy that “advocates for policies that respect the ocean’s inherent right to exist, flourish and regenerate,” thus promoting the rights of the ocean.
