Summary

In 2012, a report by the Secretary-General drew on contributions made by an interactive dialogue of the General Assembly. The report stresses that a major cultural shift must occur to achieve harmony with nature. It concludes by emphasizing that “a new economic system is needed that discerns, retains and builds upon areas and practices that allow people to create a sustainable society.” The report also recommends that member states on the Harmony with Nature approach outlined in the report, ensure policy-making in sustainable development is informed by the current findings on the impacts of humanity on the Earth system, and showcase support for the development of holistic and integrated approaches to sustainable living in harmony with nature.
