Summary

In 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution promoting harmony with nature. The resolution emphasized the importance of ensuring an equitable, balanced and sustainable relationship with the Earth. The resolution invites states to expand a knowledge network to advance a holistic conceptualization and promote harmony with nature, exemplified by indigenous peoples and others. It also recognizes the need for broader measures of sustainable development to complement gross domestic product. The resolution “calls for holistic and integrated approaches to sustainable development, in its three dimensions, that will guide humanity to live in harmony with nature and lead to efforts to restore the health and integrity of the Earth’s ecosystems.”
