Summary

In 2010, Monroe, Maine adopted an ordinance declaring that corporations shall not be considered “natural persons” within the jurisdiction of the town. The ordinance recognizes the people’s right to self-government and right of separation. The ordinance emphasizes the responsibility to protect the town’s “natural assets,” which it defines as natural communities and ecosystems. The ordinance is still in effect.
