Summary

In 2013, the town of Grafton, New Hampshire adopted a community rights-based ordinance declaring the town’s right to a sustainable energy future and banning projects that violate that right, such as an industrial wind project proposal visible to residents. The ordinance recognized the right to a sustainable energy future, scenic preservation, water, and self-government. It also recognized rights of natural communities and ecosystems and gave residents of the town shall possess legal standing to enforce those rights on behalf of those natural communities and ecosystems.
