Summary
On December 21, 2017, the municipality of Bonito in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil adopted an amendment incorporating the Rights of Nature into the Organic Law, becoming the first city in Brazil to create a law recognizing rights of nature. The amendment recognizes the right of nature to exist, thrive, and evolve, and says the municipality should act to assure all members of the natural community, human and non-human, of the municipality of Bonito, the have the right to an ecologically healthy and balanced environment and the maintenance of ecosystemic processes necessary to good quality of life. The amendment also says the municipality is in charge of defending and preserving it for the present and future generations of the members of the earth community. The municipality will promote the amplification of its public policies in environmental, health, educational, and economic areas, the amendment says.
