Summary
In 2020, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), Parks Canada, and Łutsël K’é Dene First Nation made agreements to designate Thaidene Nëné as a jointly established Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area. The agreements do not mention who owns the land, but ban industrial or extractive development, infrastructure corridors, small-scale hydroelectric development, and quarrying. Thaidene Nëné has a management board made up of equal members of all parties that will create a Management Plan with a long-term environmental and cultural vision including protecting land and wildlife, managing visitors, and supporting the Dene way of life. The agreements are still in effect at the time of this summary.
