Summary
In 2021 at the One Planet Summit in France, Prince Charles of Wales announced the creation of his “Terra Carta”—a charter that puts sustainability at the heart of the private sector. The Terra Carta for Nature, People, and Planet serves as the guiding mandate for the Prince of Wales’ Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI).
Although not legally binding, His Majesty King Charles III, then The Prince of Wales, states that “The ‘Terra Carta’ offers the basis of a recovery plan that puts Nature, People and Planet at the heart of global value creation – one that will harness the precious, irreplaceable power of Nature combined with the transformative innovation and resources of the private sector.”
One aim of the Tera Carta is to reunite people and planet by giving fundamental rights and value to Nature, recognizing that “the fundamental rights and value of Nature must represent a step-change in our ‘future of industry’ and ‘future of economy’ approach.”
