Summary
The Norms for the Prevention and Repression of Ecocide was proposed on June 5, 2025 to the Regional Council of Sardinia in Italy. The bill contains multiple provisions mandating public education about ecocide and including environmental assessments on ecocide. If passed, the bill would make Sardinia the first Italian region to formally legislate on ecocide.
The legislation is organized into five chapters. The first chapter establishes guiding principles for the law and defines ecocide. The second chapter introduces awareness-raising and ecocide prevention measures, such as educational actions in schools and among citizens and an obligation to carry out preventive ecocide risk assessments. The third chapter outlines sanctions and legal actions for serious environmental damage. The fourth chapter obligates reports on environmental crimes. The fifth chapter establishes the Regional Observatory for Ecological Justice to monitor and regulate proposals and finances of the law.
