Summary
In 2020, Representative Carlos del Frade submitted a Rights of Nature bill. It would give nature, also referred to as Pachamama in the document, “the right to full respect for its existence and the maintenance and regeneration of its vital cycles and functions, structure and evolutionary processes.” It also would require “the recognition, recovery, respect, protection, and dialogue of the diversity of feelings, values, knowledge, practices, skills transcendence, transformations, sciences, technologies and standards, of all cultures that seek to live in harmony with nature.” It would give all people, communities, and organizations the legitimacy to demand the protection of rights of nature.
