Summary

In 2013, residents of Sangerville, Maine adopted a community bill of rights ordinance declaring the town’s right “to sustainable infrastructure which is integrated into the community as part of the Town’s planning processes, which benefits the Town, and does not damage the natural environment.” The ordinance also gives residents the right to a healthy environment, clean air and water, and scenic preservation (2). The ordinance also recognizes rights of nature and is still in effect (4).
