Summary
In 2016, the Judiciary of the Mexican Federation granted a citizen’s claim against local authorities of Oaxaca and Mexico for the contamination of the Atoyac and Salados rivers, safeguarding his right to a healthy environment. The court imposed the obligation on local and national authorities to “implement actions for the conservation, restoration, and surveillance of the ecological balance, as well as the protection of the environment.” This includes the obligation to carry out cleanup programs among others.
