Summary

In 2015, Pope Francis wrote an encyclical emphasizing ecocentrist values and the “duty to protect the Earth and to ensure its fruitfulness for coming generations.” His encyclical detailed the grave implications of climate change and the burden of environmental consequences on poor countries. He also declares that Christians “must forcefully reject the notion that our being created in God’s image and given dominion over the Earth justifies absolute dominion over other creatures. He emphasizes mutual responsibility between humans and nature.
