Summary
In 2019, a municipal ordinance from Orurillo in the province of Melgar in the region of Puno recognized Madre Agua – Yaku-Unu Mama as a subject of rights. It includes puquios (subterranean aqueducts), springs, rivers, ponds and lakes. The ordinance bases its arguments on rights of nature, indigenous (quechua culture) rights, the right for a healthy environment, and future generations.
