Summary
In 2019, a municipal ordinance from Orurillo, Peru recognized Mother Water (Yaku Unu Mama) as a living being with rights within the jurisdiction of this municipality. This is a broad recognition of all water sources within the Orurillo district, including puquios (subterranean aqueducts), springs, rivers, ponds and lakes. The ordinance bases its arguments on rights of nature, indigenous (quechua culture) rights, the right for a healthy environment, and future generations.
