Summary

In 2017, the NonHuman Rights Project filed a petition in Connecticut Superior Court demanding the court recognize the legal personhood of three elephants, Beulah, Karen, and Minnie. The petition also asked the court to recognize the elephant’s fundamental right to bodily liberty and their release to PAWS ARK 2000 natural habitat sanctuary. However, the court denied their petition. NhRP appealed, arguing that the denial was based on errors of law. After many denials, the Appellate Court granted the NhRP permission to file a supplemental brief and oral arguments in 2020. However, NhRP denied habeas relief.
