Summary
In 2019, the New Zealand government passed the Ngāti Rangi Claims Settlement Act 2019. The Ngāti Rangi are one of four Whanganui large natural groups recognized by the Crown. Their area of interest includes Ohakune and Waiouru, and borders Raetihi. The act adopts an indigenous model, establishes measures to protect those areas of interests, and declares that Te Waiū-o-Te-Ika, a Whangaehu River catchment, “is a living and indivisible whole from Te Wai ā-moe to the sea, comprising physical (including mineral) and metaphysical elements, giving life and healing to its surroundings and communities.”
