Summary
In 2007, the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada signed an agreement that established co-management between them to conserve SGaan Kinghlas-Bowie Seamount, an ancient underwater volcano. SGaan Kinghlas-Bowie Seamount has great cultural significance to the Haida Nation, which is considered a supernatural being. Due to this interconnection with SGaan Kinghlas-Bowie Seamount, the agreement designates the site as a federal marine protected area and establishes a management board made up of both parties to advise the governments. The management board incorporates the six guiding principles reflected in Haida ethics, values and laws into its planning.
