Summary
Transgenic soybean seeds were found in crops of various parishes and cantons of the Los Ríos province through monitoring starting in 2015. A protection action was presented to request the withdrawal of the seeds because it violated constitutional rights. The judge accepted the action and declared that rights of nature were violated. The judge then directed the Ministry of Agriculture to take measures to guarantee Ecuador is following constitutional provisions without transgenic seeds. The Ministry of Agriculture must also carry out training for farmers and officials so that they know about the constitutional prohibition related to transgenic crops and seeds and that the sale of GMO seeds is prohibited.
