Summary
In June 2019, the city of Florianopolis in Brazil approved an amendment, which states the municipality is responsible for promoting diversity and harmony with nature, and preserving, recovering, restoring and expanding natural ecosystem processes to provide a socio-economic resilience of urban and rural environments with the planning and management of natural resources. The amendment is intended to promote the sustainable management of common use resources to respect the principles of good living and recognize rights of nature. One councilor was given charge of promoting public policies and environmental monitoring instruments so that nature’s rights are considered in municipal budget programs and government actions.
