Summary
In 2020, the European Union Parliament passed a resolution addressing deforestation and the protection of forests in order to restore their biodiversity, with recommendations to the Commission on an EU legal framework to halt and reverse EU-driven global deforestation. The resolution recognizes that forests have cultural and spiritual value for many people and peoples and that “forests and biodiversity also have an intrinsic value beyond their use value to humans.” It also states that the EU Parliament considers “that ancient and primary forests should be considered and protected as global commons and that their ecosystems should be granted a legal status.”
