Summary
The Management Plan for Protected Areas of Galapagos Good Living was published in 2014 to provide guidance on how two protected areas, the Galapagos National Park and the Galapagos Marine Reserve, should be managed. The plan identifies new challenges in the protection of these areas and strategies for restoration.
The plan establishes a set of guiding principles, including rights of nature. To respect the rights of nature, the plan acknowledges that the State shall encourage natural and legal persons to protect nature and respect all the elements that comprise an ecosystem. Additionally, the plan recognizes that restoration of natural ecosystems is an obligation of the State. The plan also requires the State to establish mechanisms to achieve restoration and mitigate harmful environmental activities.
