Summary
On 22 January 2025, three NGOs, The Leatherback Project, Ocean Vision Legal, and Earth Law Center, submitted a letter to the Minister of Environment of Panama, Juan Carlos Navarro, on behalf of the Ocean for the incorporation of the Rights of Nature as a guiding framework for the implementation of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR). CMAR is an intergovernmental initiative between Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Panamá. Based on the interests and priorities of its member states. CMAR promotes conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, which is achieved through regional governmental strategies and supported by civil society, international cooperation, and non-governmental agencies. This is feasible as all four CMAR States have recognized the Rights of Nature in some form.
