Summary

The Global Pact was drafted and presented to states by an international network of hundreds of experts in order to develop a global legal framework that protects the planet. The pact emphasizes states’ duties to take care of the environment and the need to “take necessary measures to maintain and restore the diversity and capacity of ecosystems and human communities to withstand environmental disruptions and degradation and to recover and adapt.” In 2018, the UN Secretary General wrote a report recommending states adopt such a pact. The negotiations are ongoing at the time of this summary.
