Summary
The project of the Global Pact for the Environment was proposed in June 2017 by an international network of hundreds of the most prominent jurists (professors, judges, and lawyers) representing more than 40 countries from the north and south and coordinated by the Environment Commission of the Club des Juristes (a legal think tank). The network was formalized into the “International Group of experts for the Pact” (IGEP).
The Global Pact was drafted and presented to states in order to develop a global legal framework that protects the planet. The pact emphasizes states’ duties to take care of the environment and the need to “take necessary measures to maintain and restore the diversity and capacity of ecosystems and human communities to withstand environmental disruptions and degradation and to recover and adapt.”
In 2018, the UN Secretary General wrote a report recommending states adopt such a pact. The negotiations are ongoing at the time of this summary.
