Summary

In 2014, NGO Garn held a people’s tribunal that convened the Bay Area Rights of Nature Alliance. The tribunal heard cases against Chevron and its refinery in Richmond. The tribunal found Chevron, its Richmond refinery, and the fossil fuel industry guilty of “violations to human rights and rights of natural ecosystems” and spoke about the importance of a future of living in harmony with nature through recognizing nature’s rights. The rulings call for defining new economic models, social systems, and governance structures to pursue this future.
