Summary
In 2008, Atkinson, New Hampshire adopted an ordinance emphasizing local self-government and declared that the residents’ water is held in the public trust as a common resource to be used for the benefit of Atkinson residents and of the natural ecosystems of which they are a part. The ordinance recognized rights of nature and considers natural communities and ecosystems “persons” for the purposes of enforcing rights of nature (3).
