Summary
The Alameda Whale Safe City Resolution was adopted on October 15 of 2024 and establishes the City of Alameda’s formal commitment to supporting the free and safe passage of whales, sea turtles, and other marine wildlife in its coastal waters to ensure that Californians of current and future generations have the opportunity to enjoy the state’s abundant marine biodiversity. The resolution was authored by Ben Grundy, an Oceans Campaigner with the Center for Biological Diversity. Building on Alameda’s prior environmental leadership and aligning with California’s Vision Zero target of zero whale and sea turtle mortality, the resolution acknowledges the significant human-caused threats posed by vessel strikes and fishing gear entanglements. It affirms support for state-led strategies, including investment in whale-safe fisheries and innovative technologies such as on-demand fishing gear, while recognizing the ecological, cultural, and economic importance of healthy marine ecosystems.
